[Madison, WI] – For weeks, Milwaukee law enforcement has struggled to manage the rising crime on Water Street — including one weekend of violence that ended with five people killed and 16 people injured. Yesterday, criminals threw an explosive device at police that sent two officers to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Tony Evers has been silent as Milwaukee police officers say that Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s gutting of 120 police positions are responsible for the violence spinning out of control. This comes after Madison and Milwaukee experienced the third and fourth highest homicide spikes in the nation in 2020, and when nights of riots left Kenosha burned, Tony Evers sent just one third of the National Guard troops that local officials requested and even had to be asked by law enforcement to “refrain from making statements specific to Kenosha” that were fanning the flames.
“The horrific consequences of the Democrats’ ‘defund the police’ movement have reached Wisconsin, and Tony Evers is doing nothing,” said Republican Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Anna Kelly. “Wisconsinites need a governor who will keep our communities safe, not fan the flames of violence.”
