[Madison, WI] – Today, failed “education governor” Tony Evers attempted to quietly veto a bipartisan education bill. Senate Bill 454 would have helped educators identify and serve students who are struggling to read, while providing more information to parents.
This comes as recent DPI data quantified Evers’ failure to support kids, revealing that English language arts proficiency is down by over 16 percent, math proficiency is down by over 20 percent, and just 8 percent of Black students are proficient in math after Evers failed to lead on reopening schools. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s education system has been flooded with over $5 billion in federal and state support in recent years. Evers has spent more time grandstanding about funding to make headlines than presenting real solutions to benefit students.
Evers’ parents-last approach won’t resonate with Wisconsin voters. In a state that Joe Biden won by ten points, Virginia this week rejected fellow teachers union crony Terry McAuliffe, whose comment that he “[doesn’t] think parents should be telling schools what they should teach” was the final nail in the coffin in his loss to Republican Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin.
“Tony Evers claims to care about kids, but he refused to help reopen schools, he’s blocking bipartisan bills, and he’s presenting zero solutions to solve the education problems he helped create,” said Republican Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Anna Kelly. “Evers’ teachers union first, students-last approach is failing a generation of kids.”
